The most popular run around a lake is around the Wolfgangsee. Every October thousands of runner come to master the difficult track of 27km and 200m height. Even for hikers this run around the lake is attractive. But you don’t have to manage the whole way, there are possibilities to go back by a ship. You can go in both directions. Here is a description of the track:
The start is in front of the church in St. Wolfgang, from there you go on the street in the westward direction, then alongside the lake to the town Ried (3 km). Here you turn right on a rising hiking trail where you come to the highest point at a chapel (735m). Then you go downwards to an idyllic Falkenstein church and then to Fürnberg (Inn km 6, from May to October). On wonderful hiking trails along the lake you come to nice houses of Brunnwinkl, then you go to the old Mondseer-street with its lordly villas. A soon as the street leaves the forest the wonderful park of the hotel Billroth appears. Now a short way leads down to the „Sonnbichl“. At the sunny place you will find some benches where you can enjoy the view at the Strobler Mountains. Then the way passes the indoor swimming pool and the lido to the church of St. Gilgen (km 9). From there you come to the Ischler Street to the lake where you’ll find the landing stage of the liner trade. From here you could go back to St. Wolfgang by ship.
Along the promenade at the lake you come to the town gateway south, next an asphalted foot and bicycle path leads to the inn Gamsjaga. There the hiking trail turns of the highway and leads through the towns Gschwand and Farchen to the Staudachwald. After crossing the forest you arrive the town Abersee-Reith and then to the Zinkenbach (bei km 16).
When you crossed the Zinkenbach you are standing in Strobl. Then the way leads straight on the former rail of the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn.
After 1 km you come straight to the lake and to the landing stage Gschwendt.
On a footpath you go 500 m then you turn left and soon you arrive at a wonderful situated homestead the Pitznerbauer. Now you are going to the Waßbad on the lake route and soon you will arrive at the nature reserve Blinklingmoos a huge upland moor.
From the eastern end of the moor the houses of Strobl are not far away and to the church. At the promenade of the lake is a landing stage for shipping.
From the church you are going further on the promenade to the Klausbrücke (bridge).
Now the hiker leaves the official running track and stays along the lake and comes to the Lapidarium. That is a collection of stones around the lake.
Then the way leads along the rock faces of the Bürglstein to Berau where it meets the running track again. On a foot and bicycle path beneath the street you come to the houses of St. Wolfgang and shortly after to the parish church were the journey started.
